Best Time to Visit Peru:
A Month-by-Month Guide
When is the best time to visit Peru?
For most travelers, the strongest months are May, June, September and October — dry Andean skies, clear Machu Picchu views, and a more balanced rhythm than peak July–August. The right month, however, depends on where you're going.
One country,
three climates
Peru is not a country you can understand through one season. In a single journey, you can move from Lima's Pacific cliffs to the Sacred Valley's high-altitude light, from the stone terraces of Machu Picchu to the deep green humidity of the Amazon. Desert, cloud forest, glacier valleys and colonial cities — within a few days of each other.
That is what makes Peru extraordinary. It is also what makes timing matter. The most common mistake in planning is checking the weather for "Peru" as if the country had one climate. It does not. The coast, the Andes and the Amazon each follow their own rhythm — and the right season for your trip depends entirely on where you want to go and how you want to travel.
"The best time to visit Peru is not about finding a perfect month. It's about choosing the right season for the journey you actually want to live."
For a first-time traveler combining Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, the answer is usually May to October, with the shoulder months of May, September and October offering an especially balanced experience. But the most thoughtful answer is always more precise than that.

Peru's climate is shaped by three very different geographies. Understanding which one anchors your itinerary is the first step toward choosing the right season.
The Coast
Best: Dec – Apr
Lima & The Pacific Coast
Dry, desert-like and shaped by the Pacific, Peru's coast has two distinct faces. From December to April, Lima is warm, sunny and at its most energetic — the ideal window for coastal gastronomy, Paracas, sand dunes and the northern beaches.
- Dec–Apr: warm sun, 22–28°C, ideal for the coast
- Jun–Sep: famous "garúa" — cool mist, grey skies
- Year-round for: restaurants, museums, Miraflores
- Best pairs with: Cusco and Machu Picchu in May–Oct
The Andes
Best: May – Oct
The Andes Highlands
Where seasonality matters most. The dry season brings cleaner skies, sharper views and more reliable trekking. The rainy season — November to March — turns the valleys intensely green, but complicates mountain logistics.
- May–Oct: dry season, blue skies, best for treks
- Jun–Aug: peak season — book well in advance
- Nov–Mar: rainy, greener, fewer visitors
- Jan–Feb: wettest months, Inca Trail may close
The Amazon
Best: May – Sep
The Peruvian Amazon
Warm, humid and alive all year. There is no truly dry Amazon — rain is part of the ecosystem. The question is whether you prefer slightly drier trails or high water levels that open deeper river access.
- May–Sep: slightly drier, trails more accessible
- Nov–Mar: higher water, deeper boat access, lush forest
- Wildlife: visible year-round, varies by lodge area
- Always pack: rain gear, breathable layers, repellent
Best time by
travel style
The right month is not the same for every traveler. A honeymoon, a family vacation, a trekking expedition — each has its own ideal window.
First-Time Peru Trip
For a classic first journey — Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu — the strongest months are May, June, September and October. May is especially beautiful: the Andes are drying out after the rains, landscapes still carry some green, and the heaviest crowds haven't fully arrived.
Luxury & Private Journeys
For luxury travel, May, September and October often offer the best rhythm: beautiful Andean conditions without the density of peak July–August. Premium hotels and private guides can still book out — but the journey feels more fluid, more yours.
Trekking in the Andes
For the Inca Trail, Salkantay, Lares, Ausangate or Huayhuash, the dry season is the only reliable window. May to September gives drier trails, better visibility and manageable cold. May and September offer the best balance of conditions and comfort.
Family Vacations
For families, June to August aligns with Northern Hemisphere summer holidays and delivers reliable Andean weather. Those with more flexibility will find May, September and October quieter, more manageable, and often more enjoyable with children.
Honeymoon in Peru
May, September and October are ideal. These months combine beautiful Andean light with the quieter rhythm that makes a honeymoon feel romantic rather than rushed. Lima, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, a luxury lodge in the Amazon — designed to feel unhurried and intimate.
Photography Travel
Peru changes dramatically by season. The dry season gives you clean skies and sharp mountain light. The rainy season delivers dramatic clouds, vivid greens and reflective terraces that transform the landscape into something otherworldly.

More than weather
The best time to visit Machu Picchu is generally May to October — the Andean dry season, when there are more clear days and sharper mountain views. But Machu Picchu has a subtropical mountain climate. Mist, clouds and sudden rain can happen even in the dry season, and in many photographs it's this atmosphere — terraces emerging from layers of cloud — that makes the site so extraordinary.
For the best experience, timing is not only about the month. It's about the hour of entry, the circuit you book, your train logistics and where you stay the night before. A visit designed around the right details feels entirely different from one that simply arrives on the scheduled day.
Machu Picchu requires advance booking: timed entry tickets sell out months ahead in peak season. June, July and August require the most lead time — often 3 to 4 months for premium entry slots and the Huayna Picchu circuit.
Best months overall
May, June, September and October offer the best balance of clear skies, manageable crowds and strong train availability.
Most atmospheric
April and October bring mist between the stones, lush terraces and a more contemplative atmosphere — beautiful for photography and slower visits.
Most crowded
June, July and August see the heaviest international demand. Still worth it with the right planning — but book everything well ahead.
Rainiest months
January and February see the most rain and cloud in the Andes. The Inca Trail is typically closed in February for maintenance.

Peru with fewer crowds
For travelers who want good conditions without being in the middle of peak demand, the shoulder months are consistently underrated. April, May, September, October and early November offer a quieter experience while preserving most of the weather advantages.
May is particularly strong: the Andes are drying out after the rains, the light has a freshness that peak summer can't match, and major sites like Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley feel more accessible and more yours.
If the Machu Picchu experience is central to your journey, the difference between July and May is not just weather — it's the quality of attention, the pace of the visit, the feeling of being somewhere rather than simply passing through.
So, when should you go?
For most travelers, the answer is May to October — especially if the Andes and Machu Picchu are central. But the most elegant answer is always more precise.
Peru rewards travelers who plan with intention. The right season doesn't just improve the weather — it changes the rhythm of the entire journey.
